Tο Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΠΜΣ) «Αγγλική Γλώσσα, Γλωσσολογία και Μετάφραση» του Τμήματος Αγγλικής Γλώσσας και Φιλολογίας, σε συνεργασία με το Διατμηματικό Πρόγραμμα Μεταπτυχιακών Σπουδών (ΔΠΜΣ) «Μετάφραση: Ελληνική, Αγγλική, Ρωσική», διοργανώνει τη σειρά διαλέξεων «Σεμινάρια του ΠΜΣ/ΔΠΜΣ» σχετικά με θεματικές που αφορούν τη γλώσσα, τη γλωσσολογία και τη μετάφραση.
Η επόμενη διάλεξη για το εαρινό εξάμηνο θα πραγματοποιηθεί την Τετάρτη, 1 Απριλίου στις 12 μμ στην Αίθουσα 209 της Φιλοσοφικής Σχολής. Θα ακολουθήσει κέρασμα.
Sofia Malamatidou (University of Birmingham), "Translating Worlds: How tourism language shapes what we see and do"
Tourism websites may appear on the surface as simply promoting destinations, but importantly they also provide a window into how we perceive the world, which elements of it we prioritise, and how we relate to it through language. Therefore, tourism translation is much more than simply translating words, it is also about translating worlds. This talk explores how our perception of the world is encoded in linguistic choices in promotional tourism texts and how these choices guide tourist gaze and influence how we conceptualise tourist behaviour. Using real examples from official tourism websites in different languages, I show how ideology can be encoded in seemingly neutral phrases, and what happens to it when the same content is translated for different audiences with alternative worldviews. Ultimately, this talk challenges the common assumption of tourism discourse as mainly info-promotional and presents it as an active force shaping what we see and what we do when we travel.
