Course description

What is the future of European integration in an era of multiple integration crises?  Rising euroscepticism has encouraged demands for a return to the nation-state or a redefinition of its relationship with European integration. The aim of this course is to understand what has produced this backlash.

Students are first introduced to the European nation-state, its evolution and the role it has played in the popular imagination. Then the course delves into the multiple ways in which participation in the European Union (EU) and the continual deepening of integration influence the European nation-state and its functions, impacting on institutions, policies and citizens.

Three categories of European state are examined: full EU members, candidate states, and non-members who are linked to the EU through different types of institutionalised relationships. The course also considers Brexit, both as a debate and as a process.

Course Goals

  • Understanding the interaction between domestic and international politics in the contemporary world
  • Understanding the nature and evolution of the European nation-state
  • Understanding multiple dimensions of state transformation through European integration
  • Deepening students' understanding of European integration through the study of its consequences at the national level
  • Offering students the conceptual tools to understand current debates in European politics, e.g. about euroscepticism and Brexit

Students will also:

  • acquire experience in carrying out an individual research project / case study
