Description

AMERICAN POETRY (A-Kar)

The course offers a selective survey of significant developments in American poetry from Puritanism to the end of the twentieth century. We will examine varieties of the American experience, the search for a voice, the exploration and construction of the American identity, the emergence and the avatars of the American sense of self.

Through text-centered study, larger cultural features will be considered as well as the thematic, stylistic, and innovative characteristics of the set texts. Alongside important historical, cultural and intellectual contexts, through close readings of primary texts, we will also focus on the elements of informed critical analysis and on essential theoretical categories in literary studies.
