2nd Semester Core Course

 

Introduction to Linguistics II

 

 

The course aims to familiarize students with aspects of the study of linguistic meaning and its relation to social and cultural parameters of its production and understanding.

 

More specifically, the course introduces basic concepts pertaining to the semantic and pragmatic analysis of language and discourse. Moreover, issues in sociolinguistics, such as the relation between language and social and regional variation, are also explained and exemplified.

 

The course is offered in the form of lectures and is supported by an extensive bibliography on the topics introduced in the course, study material practised in class, and two textbooks, parts of which are generally expected to facilitate students' study. All teaching materials are uploaded on e-class. Self-assessment tests during the semester are used to monitor students' understanding of the topics discussed in class.
