What does contemporary Greece look like through its history, its language, its literature and its arts?

 

Contemporary Greece: History, Arts and Letters offers Erasmus+ students an interdisciplinary journey through modern Greek culture and society. Designed especially for international students, the course brings together scholars and specialists from the fields of history, literature, theatre, cinema, music, art history and linguistics.

 

Rather than approaching contemporary Greece through a single discipline, the course explores the country through the different ways in which its history, society and cultural identity have been expressed and represented. Students will discover key moments in modern Greek history and encounter the people, ideas, artistic works and cultural practices that have shaped Greece from the modern period to the present.

 

The course combines lectures, discussion and interdisciplinary perspectives, providing students with the opportunity to understand Greece not only as a historical and geographical space, but also as a vibrant cultural experience. Particular emphasis is placed on the relationship between historical developments and their reflection in the arts and letters—from literature and theatre to cinema, music and the visual arts.

Assessment: Final essay (5,000–8,000 words)
Attendance: Mandatory; up to three absences are permitted.
