The study of nationalism provides an important key to understand the modern world. The ideology of nationalism, its power of social mobilisation and political allegiance relate to new types of politics, culture, state building that emerged in modernity. Its persistence in time, spread in space and appeal in all social groups evince the historical and interpretative significance of the phenomenon. 

Through the theoretical and historical study of nationalism, the course aims at contributing to students’ understanding of modernity in Southeast Europe. The populations of this area experienced the consequences of the spread of nationalism, providing telling case studies of the demise of traditional social structures and the emergence of modern identities. 

The first six weeks of the course will be devoted to lectures focusing on the theoretical and historical framework of the study of nationalism. Questions to be discussed include the historical linkage of nationalism to modernity and its possible typologies; ideologies and cultural movements: their western prototypes and their applications in Southeast Europe; theories and typologies of nationalism; nationalism as political principle and state ideology; its relation to religion; national myths and national histories; types of intellectuals as agents of nationalism. 

Students are expected to become familiar with the broad problems of theorising nationalism as those are presented in the works of Ernest Gellner, Ellie Kedourie, Eric Hobsbawm, Benedict Anderson and Anthony Smith. The course then proceeds to the examination of case studies and individual or group presentations of the various manifestations of nationalism in Southeast Europe.
