Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The objective of the course is to teach students to reflect philosophically about the nature of reality and whether and how we can grasp it. The character of the course is both historical and systematic. Half of the sessions will be devoted to the history of metaphysics and epistemology, and half will focus on key topics and the way they are dealt with in contemporary philosophy.

 

The first three sessions will deal with the metaphysics and epistemology of the Presocratics, Plato, and Aristotle respectively, acknowledging their importance in shaping the research agenda of these two disciplines. The historical part of this course will be completed by providing a flavor of the conceptions of Bergson, Husserl, Frege, Russell, Heidegger and Carnap.

 

The second part of the course will focus on central issues of contemporary metaphysics: ontology (session 7), universals (session 8) and grounding (session 9) and of contemporary epistemology: a priori knowledge (session 10), knowledge as justified true belief (session 11), knowledge first epistemology and virture epistemology (session 12). The last session will be devoted to The Constitution of Science, Cambridge UP, 2024.
