Goals:

On this series of lectures, the aim is to teach the art of improvisation from the basic jazz forms to advanced concepts.

Also to interact with artificial intelligence, and connect with other art forms such as poetry, prose, visuals and dance.

As a prerequisite student will need to be on an advanced level regarding jazz harmony.

For the lesson’s projects students will transcribe solos from the jazz repertoire and will compose, analyse and perform their own improvisations.

Lesson plan:

Intro:

1 Theoretical background of improvisation, bibliography and an analytical harmony draft paper.

2 The concept of improvisation as storytelling.

Developing a personal voice, imitation and originality.

Scat singing, drum skills and explanation of swing and related time feels.

Related literature.

Core:

3 Blues (bebop major and minor blues, use of hard bop vocabulary).

4 Rhythm changes (from basic approach to Eternal Triangle changes).

5 Standards 1 (American songbook, to Charlie Parker, Miles Davis and Thelonius Monk).

6 Standards 2 (hard bop, Giant Steps changes, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock).

7 Modal (Miles Davis, John Coltrane).

8 Free and collective improvisation.

Advanced:

9 Jazz idiomatic, Linear and Vertical, the Sonny Rollins linear thematic development concept versus Coltrane vertical sheets of sound and spiritual approach.

10 Recoding phrases and solos by the students to assess their development in assimilating the language, imagination and creativity.

11 Interaction with AI systems, using DYCI2, Omax, mirror and other experimental applications and algorithms to create a sonic landscape and converse with fragmented material.

12 Connection of jazz improvisation with spoken word, visual arts, dance and other art forms for multi-performances.

Assignements:

  • Progress project: Before the advanced sessions the assessment will consist of one written solo composed by the students on 3 choruses of blues or on 1 chorus of rhythm changes. Additionally, a short 2 page analyses of their improvisation with references to styles and players.

  • Final project: A 10-page assignment at the end of the semester will focus on analysing and comparing 2 contrasting solos from the repertoire with historical, musicological, statistical, stylistic analyses, bibliography and original ideas to contribute to the research area.
