BIOLOGY AND APPLICATIONS OF REGENERATIVE MEDICINE (S. 2024-2025)
(54694) - Maria Roubelakis
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
Regenerative medicine is a very dynamic and innovative field in Medicine. Regenerative Medicine successfully integrates the fields of tissue engineering, cell, developmental and molecular biology, biomaterials science and nanotechnology, with a decisive contribution to the therapeutic treatment of genetic and acquired diseases. It has direct applications in tissue and organ regeneration and repair, as well as in the development of treatments for non-curable diseases. In particular, the development of stem cell therapeutic applications, in combination with gene transfer and therapy protocols, exhibits great promise.
The content of the course will be renewed annually and includes:
- Fundamentals of embryonic, fetal and adult stem cell biology.
- Developmental of tissue regeneration mechanisms.
- Applications of regenerative medicine in the treatment of human diseases.
- Applications of biomaterials/nanomaterials and biocompatibility.
- Basic principles and methods of gene therapy.
- Models for conducting a clinical study based on gene transfer and cell therapy.
- Bioethical issues
- Collection and process of biological material and Biobanks
Optional visits to Research Institutes and GMP laboratories interest are part of the course.
The course aims at understanding
- the fundamental principles of embryonic, fetal and adult stem cell biology and their applications in medicine,
- the basic laboratory methods of progenitor cell culture and differentiation,
- the clinical and laboratory techniques of regenerative medicine used to treat diseases
- of cutting-edge technologies based on gene transfer technology
