Cell Signaling-Molecular Biomechanics
(MEDICEN136) - Effie Basdra, Christina Piperi, Christos Adamopoulos, Antonios Gargalionis, Kostas Papavassiliou, Georgios Kalliolias
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
This elective course offers an advanced study into the interrelated fields of Cell Signaling and Molecular Biomechanics, focusing on how cells perceive and respond to a variety of biochemical and mechanical stimuli. Through a series of thematic sections, the course delves into the intricate mechanisms of signal transduction, including G Protein-Coupled Receptor (GPCR) signaling, Wnt signaling, Receptor Tyrosine Kinase (RTK) pathways, and the role of protein kinases and phosphatases. Students will explore how these signaling pathways regulate cellular processes such as growth, differentiation, and survival, and how their dysregulation can lead to diseases like cancer. The course also examines the mechanical aspects of cellular signaling, emphasizing the role of mechanotransduction in physiological and pathological conditions, including polycystic kidney disease, cancer, and musculoskeletal disorders. By integrating molecular and biomechanical perspectives, students will gain a comprehensive understanding of how mechanical forces and signaling networks interact at the cellular level to maintain tissue integrity and contribute to disease progression. Additionally, the course includes practical applications of biomechanics in clinical settings, particularly in orthopedics and rehabilitation, and encourages students to apply their knowledge to real-world clinical problems. Through lectures, case studies, and student-led seminars, the course aims to enhance students' ability to critically evaluate scientific literature, develop effective presentations, and foster collaborative learning. This course is designed to prepare medical students for applying advanced concepts of cell signaling and biomechanics to diagnostic and therapeutic challenges in clinical practice.
