The purpose of the course is to introduce the undergraduate students of the medical school to basic concepts, principles and mechanisms of pathogenesis and pathophysiology of the most important diseases of hematology, infections, lungs, endocrinology and the digestive system, as well as familiarizing them with basic laboratory tests that describe these pathophysiological mechanisms at a clinical and research-educational level.

 

THEMATIC SECTION

Topics covered:

  • Pathophysiology of the immune system: immune system cells, immune response, transplants, autoantibodies, autoimmune diseases
  • Pathophysiology of fluid, electrolyte and acid-base balance: volume-body fluid composition, water balance, sodium-potassium-calcium-phosphorus regulation, pH regulation, acidosis-alkalosis
  • Pathophysiology of renal diseases: renal function control, renal disease symptoms, renal failure
  • Pathophysiology of the respiratory system: Lung functions, obstructive lung diseases
  • Pathophysiology of circulatory system: the heart as a pump, assessment of cardiac function, heart failure, principles of electrocardiography, ischemic heart disease, hypertension, arteriosclerosis, atherosclerosis, vascular remodeling, aneurysms, vasculitis
  • Pathophysiology of hematopoietic system: granulocyte diseases, paraproteinemias, blood coagulation and its disorders, hematopoiesis, anemias, platelet diseases
  • Pathophysiology of infections: infectious agents, transmission, inflammatory reaction, fever
  • Pathophysiology of endocrine glands: functional disorders of the pituitary gland and parathyroid glands, diabetes mellitus
  • Pathophysiology of the gastrointestinal tract: symptoms of peptic diseases, peptic ulcer, hormonally active tumors, malabsorption syndrome, esophageal diseases
  • Pathophysiology of liver-biliary-pancreas: hepatitis, cirrhosis, biliary diseases, pancreatitis.Genetic principles
