Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This course covers fundamental and clinical aspects of microbiology and immunology related to the infectious agents (bacteria, viruses, fungi, parasites, etc.). These are thoroughly discussed, with special focus on their morphology, biology, diagnosis, epidemiology, pathogenesis, therapy and prevention. The role of the specific and non-specific immune system against infections and diseases, as well as in the disease causality (immunopathogenesis) is emphasized.

Learning outcomes
Students who complete this course will have a broad understanding of medical and molecular aspects of bacteriology, virology, parasitology, mycology, epidemiology, and immunity to infection. They will also receive practical training on topics ranging from infections to diagnostic methods used.

Head Professor: Tsakris Athanasios

Additional info

Main Hall Lectures: Bacteriology, Parasitology, Mycology, Virology, Diagnostic Methodology, Infectious syndromes by system.

Laboratory Practicals and Tutorials: Upper Respiratory Tract Infections, Lower Respiratory Tract Infections, Central Nervous System Infections, Cardiovascular  Infections, Urinary Tract Infections, Gastrointensal Tract Infections, Skin and Soft Tissue Infections, Sexually Transmitted  Infections, Infections from Anaerobic Microbia.

In the Course Documents Folder Tutors will be uploading all Presentations of main Hall Lectures and all Presentations of the laboratory exercises.

All updating of information relevant to the Course ( Tutors, Curriculum, Scheduling e.t.c.) will be made available in the Course Announcements Folder.

Non-attendance

The Secretariat should be informed beforehand for all absences via e-mail (see details below). In case of non-attendance, a maximum of 8 absences  during main Hall tutorials and a total of 1 (both semesters) during Lab tutorials is permitted. Should absences are to exceed this limit, students have to submit -via email- the proper documentation to the contact person (marmaniati@med.uoa.gr) of the Secretariat of the Microbiology Department. This documentation  will be reviewed by the appropriate Committee which will determine whether the absence was justified or not.

Student Performance Evaluation

Methods of  Evaluation

This is a "two stage" exam and is comprised of two interlocking parts: the first stage (PART I-1h) involves a multiple choice questionnaire of 60 questions, while the second (PART II) involves oral exams.

Grading Policy

A minimum grade of 5 is required for PART I, which will then allow the student to take PART II, where another yet minimum grade of 5 is required for PASS.

Please note that the two stages are not independent of each other and that failure  in the second stage (PART II) would mean that the student would need to resit both stages of the exam (PART I plus PART II) again in September - irrespective of his/her original grade in the first stage of the exam (PART I).
