Physiology 4^th semester

Aim

The content of the course corresponds to the following subjects of Physiology:

• Introduction to new biomedical research technologies
• Physiology of the cardiovascular system
• Physiology of the gastrointestinal system
• Physiology of the respiratory system
• Physiology of the urinary system

The course also includes laboratory knowledge concerning the operation and regulation mechanisms of the above systems.

This course is designed to introduce students to the basic structure and function of the cardiovascular, respiratory, urinary and digestive systems, through an integrated approach linking basic medical sciences with clinical medicine. In addition, it aims to familiarize students with the new technologies that promote biomedical research.

Corresponding case-based tutorials in small groups of students aim to integrate basic physiological concepts with common clinical entities.

 

The course learning outcomes, specific knowledge, skills and competences of an appropriate level, which the students will acquire with the successful completion of the course are described.

Please note: Learning objectives serve as a framework, allowing flexibility for delving deeper into the subject matter and expanding knowledge at a more profound level.

 

Topics covered

At the end of this course, which is delivered by both lectures and practical sessions, students will be able to describe mechanisms governing physiological responses and adaptations of the following physiological systems of the human body:

• Cardiovascular system
• Gastrointestinal system
• Respiratory system
• Urinary system

Learning Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide knowledge regarding physiological function of specific systems of the human body (see above).

 

Attendance

Attendance is mandatory for both lectures and labs/clinical practice. Students are allowed to miss up to 10 lecture hours/5 days (corresponding to a maximum of 20% of the total course hours). Absence is not allowed in the Labs.

 

Examinations

The course is assessed through written multiple-choice question (MCQ) exams. Access to written exams is granted only for the students who fully completed the practical sessions. In case of failure, the candidate can resit the exam during the resit examination period.

A grade of five (5) out of ten (10) or higher is required for a course to be considered complete.

The minimum grade of 5 (five) corresponds to 50% correct answers from the total number of questions in the paper, in each exam.

In case the student fails the exam (lower than 50% of correct answers), he has the right to resit again in September.
