BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING & TECHNOLOGY

(MEDICEN118) -  Theodore Papaioannou

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Biomedical Engineering and Technology is an interdisciplinary field which is rapidly growing worldwide. The application of medical technology in clinical practice and healthcare services is expanding. The course aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of biomedical technology, ensuring that students are well-prepared to integrate technological advancements into their medical training and their future medical practice by taking into account ethical, safety, quality, social and financial considerations as well.

Learning objectives & specific behaviors (outcomes) that students must exhibit at the end of the course:

  • Recall the basic principles of biomedical technology.
  • Recognise the international trends in health technology development
  • Identify historical milestones and figures in medical technology development
  • Examine the impact of medical technology on quality of life and life expectancy
  • Name terms and definitions concerning medical devices
  • Adapt current regulations for the assessment, clinical evaluation, validation, certification, use, vigillance, recall/withdrawal and reimbursement of medical technologies
  • Define the fundamental principles of acoustics, biomedical signals, bioelectronics and medical image analysis.
  • Evaluate and design experimental (in-vitro) models of biological systems and medical devices
  • Illustrate the capabilities of 3D Printing in medical research and practice
  • Outline the advancements in healthcare services introduced by the development and application of telemedicine systems and wearable medical devices
  • Identify the advantages, disadvantages, challenges and ethical concerns emerged from the use of artificial intelligence in medical practice
  • Summarize the key parameters in the development and clinical use of artificial organs and organs on chip technology
  • Describe emerging technological innovations in surgery, cardiology, radiotherapy and ophthalmology
  • Familiarize, in practice (hands on), with traditional and advanced diagnostic and therapeutic medical devices

Course days/time: Monday and Thursday at 11-12 a.m.

Place: Campus, Building 16, Ground Floor, Hall 29)

The presence of the students is essential.
