The purpose of the course is to explore the populations of the Southeastern Mediterranean region in relation to contemporary issues such as migration and expulsion, globalization, and social and cultural conflicts and identities. This course focuses on theories, research, and case-studies analysing the complexities of the phenomena of migration and culture-formation. It offers a collection of comparative analysis between countries and groups. The course is dedicated to critical examination of a wide variety of cultures and aims at a comparative understanding of how culture can critically engage with in migration, integration, and race
and ethnic relations. By the end of the course students will be able to:
- Analyse the context of migration, forced migration and refugee status of the Southeastern Mediterranean populations.
- Comprehend the basic and critical characteristics of populations of the Eastern Mediterranean region.
- Critically examine contemporary trends in migration and the impacts these changes in migration patterns have.
- Gain an in-depth understanding of the interplay between processes of culture-formation related to complex forms of migration via sociological and anthropological theoretical approaches, research evidence and case studies.
- Understand the critical characteristics of the populations of the Southern Mediterranean region.
