Quantitative Methods in Media Research
(MEDIA568) - Μιχαήλ Ταστσόγλου, Μιχάλης Χατζηκωνσταντίνου
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
This course aims to teach how quantitative research is conducted in the scientific field of communication and media studies. It aspires, beyond knowledge, to help students develop specific and sophisticated skills, which will facilitate their research activities, firstly, when preparing their thesis, secondly, in their possible engagement with the subject of quantitative research in their working or academic life.
Therefore, the course is based on two central pillars: the theory of research methodology and its application in the field of communication. Consequently, the skills developed during the course concern the design of the research, its implementation, and the statistical analysis of the results. The students are practicing what they learn in IBM SPSS software environment.
The course is divided into three sections. The first section, which is purely theoretical, touches on epistemological issues, such as quantitative research, mixed methods, reliability and validity, variables, etc. The second section deals with inductive statistics, entering data into SPSS, crosstabs of variables and the extraction of results. The third one is mainly related to skill development, whereas it includes statistical testing in quantitative research (Pearson's Chi Square Test, Fisher's exact test, T-test, ANOVA and regression), data presentation and the formatting of results in graphs via Microsoft Office software.
