The content of this course consists of two parts, one theoretical and one technical:
The course analyses the new forms of journalism and, in general, the relationship between new technologies and journalism in relation to the refugee / immigration
issue. The impact of the changes within the Media sector regarding the coverage and communication management of refugee and migration flows will also be examined. The course will also offer a deepening understanding regarding the use of Internet and social networks sites and the political, social, cultural and economic dimensions of the issue. Emphasis will be given on new techniques and forms of analysis of the digital journalism that any journalist who is familiar with the refugee / immigration issue needs to know. Emphasis will be also be given to media coverage and fake news, the mechanisms and practices of the emerging phenomenon and how to address it. Searching online information, information technologies (RSS-XML), creation of websites and blogs, interactive forms of communication, etc. will be conducted at a laboratory level.
The students will be divided into four groups in order to produce their final assignment. Each group will have to produce a multimedia piece and will have to choose between the following themes: vulnerable groups, migrant success stories, migrant integration (schooling and jobs), first reception. The groups work will be showcased in a website built by the students themselves.
