This core module introduces students to the specific features of the EU Area of Freedom, Security and Justice (AFSJ). It explores the history of its creation and the role of EU institutions involved in the relevant policy, as well as the horizontal quest for security in the above area.

The course analyses the principles and rules of EU primary and secondary law governing the constantly developing EU AFSJ,as well as the main challenges the EU and its Member States are faced with due to the recent refugee and migration crises. Focus is put on the topical fields of the Common European Asylum Policy, the EU Common Migration Policy and the main rules governing free movement, border checks and fight against crime in the AFSJ. Issues of EU solidarity and fundamental rights protection in these areas are analysed through the case law of the Court of Justice of the EU. Future perspectives are also presented, as resulting from the still pending initiative for a New Pact on Migration and Asylum.
