Sources of data in Criminology: Official statistics, self -report and victimization studies. An alternative interpretation of statistics. Main research methods. Ethical problems in research.

Schools and theoretical approaches in Criminology. The Classical and the Positive School. The sociological approach and the social level of explanation of crime. The early cartography of Quetelet and Guerry. Emil Durkheim and the concept of anomie. The Chicago School of Criminology. Strain, control, learning and subcultural theories. Symbolic interactionism and the labeling theory. Critical criminology. Marxist and conflict theories. Recent theories and theoretical perspectives and their criminal policy implications.
