Fundamentals of Public International Law - Seminar I (X 2025-26)

(2070) -  A.-L. Sicilianos, E. Papastavridis, M.L. Deftou

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The first part of the Seminar(Part I) seeks to provide LLM students with a solid understanding of the foundational sources of international law, namely treaty law and customary international law, and their interrelationship in the creation of international obligations for the States. By engaging with case studies, comparative treaty analysis, debates, and practical exercises, students will learn to apply the principles of the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties(VCLT), critically assess the role and validity of reservations, identify current trends in the field of treaty interpretation, and delve deeper into the interplay between treaty and custom. Part II takes a deep dive into issues concerning another fundamental pillar of international law, i.e., the law of international responsibility. In particular, students will be called to critically explore and discuss questions related to attribution of conduct to States; circumstances precluding wrongfulness; and reparations, as well as questions involving shared responsibility in international law.

The course further seeks to develop students’ ability to construct persuasive legal arguments, both in writing and orally, to analyze international jurisprudence and literature, and to collaborate effectively in diverse teams while strengthening their advocacy and critical reasoning skills.
