The course examines the aesthetic, historical, and political trajectory of Anglophone poetry in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. It explores formal and thematic aspects that characterize poetry of this period, and attends to the socio-political changes that shaped these works, including the two world wars, migration movements and decolonization initiatives, sexual politics, millenial concerns and the rise of Global English. Students will familiarize themselves with new movements that emerged during these centuries, such as modernism, the Harlem Renaissance, and confessional poetry, while engaging with different poetic modalities (performance poetry and Insta-poetry) and venues (little magazines and arts hubs).

Engaging with a poetic corpus spanning canonical and non-canonical writers such as Mina Loy, T.S. Eliot, W.H. Auden, Kamau Brathwaite, Sylvia Plath, and Patience Agbabi, the course will trace the transition to an increasingly globalizing, postcolonial, and intercultural world through a comparative examination of art, manifestos, and TV series (Black Mirror). Students will be encouraged to reflect on the role of poetry throughout these centuries, the ways in which different media have changed or extended our conception of poetic form, and the relationship between the word and the world from the twentieth century to the present day.
