Teaching English to Pre-Primary Learners

(ENL690) -  Ευφροσύνη Φράγκου & Νατάσσα Κόκλα

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

In recent years, language education has shifted toward much earlier stages of schooling, reflecting research findings that early language learning fosters children’s overall development - enhancing their linguistic, affective, socio-cultural, and cognitive growth. In Greece, this shift took a historic turn in September 2021, when English was officially introduced in all pre-primary schools, ushering in a new era of early language education.

This development, however, presented English teachers with considerable challenges. Many had not been specifically trained to teach very young learners—children who are still undergoing rapid developmental changes, possess limited attention spans, and require a sensitive, emotionally secure, and play-based learning environment.

The purpose of this workshop is to equip educators with the theoretical grounding and practical strategies necessary to meet these challenges effectively. Participants will explore:

  • Core principles of early language acquisition and their implications for classroom practice;
  • The design of pre-primary English courses that integrate age-appropriate and engaging materials such as videos, educational cartoons, songs, stories, board and online games, and art-based activities;
  • Ways to create lessons that are interactive, imaginative, and motivating, encouraging holistic engagement rather than rote learning.

Ultimately, the workshop promotes a vision of Early EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learning not as a separate or isolated subject, but as an integral part of the early childhood curriculum—one that aligns with children’s socio-cultural context, cognitive development, and psycholinguistic needs.
