Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
During this semester, we will be focusing on Theater Translation and Literary Adaptation.
For Theater Translation, we will be combining theory and practice. The unit includes comparative study of A Streetcar Named Desire (Tennessee Williams, 1947) and theater translation EL-EN and EN-EL.
For the Literary Adaptation unit, we will be working with Alfred Hitchcock's films inspired by Daphne De Mauer's novels, the cinematic transfer of Of Mice and Men (Steinbeck, 1937) (students will be required to read this novel throughout the course of the semester), the film based on To Kill a Mockinbird (Harper Lee, 1960) and the cultural references included in it. Also, the last courses will be dedicated to instances of global literature/cinema where the writter and the screenwritter are identical and an example of a film turned into a novel.
As for the exams, students will be required to:
EITHER
write a paper based on a literary adaptation of their choosing
OR
choose a play in English, translate an exceprt of it (appr. 500 words), and add comments on the translation strategies, problems they encountered etc.
