American Poetry

(ENL593) -  Γιώργος Γιαννακόπουλος

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This course offers a general overview of American poetry. It aims at introducing students to the major periods and movements through a selection of poems that cover a period spanning from the seventeenth century and the poetry of the Puritans to contemporary, twenty-first century poetic voices. Through text-centered study and close readings of poems, we will examine thematic and stylistic developments and innovations in relation to the historical and cultural context and we will address issues of gender, race and politics, as well as ideas about democracy, modernity, and the formation of American identity.

Attend classes regularly, having read the assigned texts (the poems are available online at the Academy of American Poets http://www.poets.org/, and/or at the Poetry Foundation http://www.poetryfoundation.org/. Additional material will be uploaded regularly to the eclass). Your participation is indispensable for the implementation of this course.
