Literary Theory and Criticism
(ENL587) - Angelos Evangelou
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
This module is designed to cultivate modes of critical reading and help the students gain an overview of key theoretical perspectives for the critical study of literature. We shall discuss topics such as the nature and function of the literary text, questions of genre, intertextual relations and narratology. The module will offer a solid grounding in poststructuralist discourses (predominantly through Jacques Derrida's deconstruction) demonstrating the ways and the reasons these remain relevant and prominent in contemporary theory and literary criticism. The module will focus on the following theoretical strands: Context and "the political" (Marxism and ideology), Postcolonial Theory, and Feminist and Queer Theory. By focusing on key concepts such as “subject,” “ideology,” “text,” “author,” “gender,” “sign” and others, we will examine the historical, political and aesthetic trajectories and contexts of these theoretical discourses that contemplate the questions of the human subject and their relation to art, texts and the world. We will probe the affiliations between texts and the world and study the ways discourses are affected by but also determine history and politics. Students will be encouraged to examine the questions and issues that are raised in the selected texts and critically engage them to formulate their own questions, consolidate their approach to texts and formulate their own views.
