This course explores the aesthetic and thematic particularities of postwar British theatre. Through the study of representative plays, students will come to grips with the technical and ideological elements that have shaped postwar British theatre. Close-reading selected plays will enable students to focus on key postwar issues such as the deconstruction of traditional subjectivities, the negotiation of gender and sexualities, sexual violence and war conflict, national identity and globalization, as well as issues that relate to the crisis of representation and the development of new media. Lastly, students will analyze the historical and socio-cultural framework within which theatre production happens, as well as the ways through which the latter framework is in dialogue with postwar British playwrights’ writing.
