COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course offered during this semester aspires to give both theoretical and practical guidance to students of translation.  The main issue that will be discussed in detail is that of equivalence: a notion that has been invariably discussed from many theoretical perspectives in different periods of time.  Students will be exposed to equivalence at different language levels, like at word level, grammatical level, textual level and pragmatics [cognitive processes, gender issues, tourism texts, etc].  All the theoretical perspectives are going to be amply explained by the use of examples in different languages.  

 ΟBJECTIVES OF THE COURSE

By the end of the course students should be able to assess the process of translation and its outcome.  Furthermore, they will  realise that translators take liberties when carrying messages across languages and cultures in order to cater for the needs of their audiences. 

All the issues above should serve as a springboard for the students’ future inquiries in the field of Translation Studies.
