TRANSLATION AND INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION
(ENL562) - Διαμαντούλα Κόρδα
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
The course intends to examine issues pertinent to cultural variation relating to pragmatics and translation. With language being the main tool in the hands of translators, students will be exposed to a variety of linguistic approaches in the field of Translation Studies to contest the close relationship with intercultural communication. Gradually, it will be shown that translation practice draws on intercultural communication and it provides independent evidence of it. A vast array of factors is going to be the focus of our attention, e.g. the text-type to be translated, the type of audience to read the ST and the TT [their age, cultural background, gender, nationality, etc.], the perception of the audience’s own identity, the cultural Other, the communicative purpose of translation, etc. Theories of culture are far from homogeneous, and their definitions reflect the richness of research that has been conducted so far. The course aspires to be as interactive as possible with students’ contributions seen as the main route of exploration. Assessment is based on written projects and oral presentations.
