Theory of Culture

(ENL534) -  Αγγελική Τσέτη

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The aim of this course is to provide students with an introduction to the theories that have defined the interdisciplinary field of cultural studies, its history and animating currents. Defined as a whole network of meanings and practices in everyday life, and attuned to the importance of context and to issues of power, inequality and difference, culture is here explored not only in terms of what Matthew Arnold called “the best that has been thought and said in the world” (high culture), but also with reference to a range of activities, artifacts and texts, their makers, audiences, and interconnections. Students will be introduced to the work of prominent individual theorists and major schools of thought—including the Frankfurt School, the Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies, structuralism, feminism, post-colonialism and post-humanism—towards examining cultural production; and they will be familiarized with various approaches to the analysis and interpretation of cultural activities throughout the course of the twentieth century.
