This course is designed to equip students, as future English teachers, with the knowledge and skills required to make effective, critical, and pedagogically informed use of Artificial Intelligence (AI), digital teaching materials, new media, and digital tools in language education. A central focus of the course is the development of AI literacy, enabling students not only to use emerging AI technologies but also to evaluate their affordances and limitations and integrate them purposefully into the design of engaging, inclusive, and learner-centred teaching and learning activities.

By the end of the course, students will be able to design and implement AI-enhanced and digitally supported lessons that develop learners’ abilities to comprehend and produce both oral and written discourse. Particular attention is given to the ways in which AI technologies can support personalised learning, generate and adapt teaching materials, provide immediate and differentiated feedback, foster learner autonomy, and create opportunities for interactive and immersive language practice.

The course is organised into thematic units focusing on methodologies, AI applications, digital resources, and tools for developing key areas of language learning, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, listening, writing, speaking, and pronunciation. Students will critically explore how AI-powered tools, digital media, and online resources can be integrated into language lessons to support the development of the four language skills and other aspects of communicative competence. They will also examine the contribution of AI to second/foreign language learning, including its potential to create adaptive learning environments, support communication practice, and respond to learners’ individual needs.

At the same time, the course places strong emphasis on developing students’ critical thinking, collaborative skills, digital literacies, AI literacy, learning strategies, and broader 21st-century skills. Students will be encouraged to approach AI critically and responsibly, considering the role of the teacher in evaluating AI-generated content and making informed pedagogical decisions about when, why, and how such technologies should be used.

Active participation and consistent attendance are essential for successful engagement with the course. Students are expected to participate fully in practical activities, apply theoretical knowledge to authentic teaching situations, experiment with AI and other digital tools, and collaborate in designing and presenting teaching projects. Book chapters, academic papers, and other resources are provided through the e-class platform to deepen students’ understanding of the theoretical and pedagogical issues addressed throughout the course. Attendance and hands-on participation in classroom tasks are therefore key components of the learning process.
