Translation and Tourism

(ΓΕ79) -  Stavroula Kefala

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This course aims to analyse the ways in which the message is constructed in tourism advertising through analysis of linguistic shifts in the translation of Greek -English pairs of tourism texts. Through the study of local and international advertising texts, the contribution of Discourse Analysis to the formation and construction of identity in tourism advertising is highlighted, revealing different aspects and strategies for the construction of the tourist experience and destination identity.

The course will focus on representations of self-images and images of the Other, traced through linguistic shifts in translation, aiming to highlight the significance of discourse in shaping intended constructions of identity, along with other marketing considerations, by also drawing on the sociological theory of Critical Cosmopolitanism (Delanty) and the analysis of the visual aspect of texts (Multimodality).

The course aspires to bring the students into contact with tourism discourse and to help them understand the dynamics of self-representation through the construction of experience, of power relations between host and traveler, and relations with the “exoticised” and “authentic” “Other”.

The overall aim is to familiarize students with practices of constructing and translating the message in tourism advertising by highlighting the role of language and translation as a tool of tourism policy and intercultural communication.
