This course, Teaching English to Young Learners, introduces students to the principles, approaches, and classroom practices involved in teaching English to children in preschool and primary education. Particular emphasis is placed on the contemporary Greek educational context and, specifically, on the Introduction of the English Language in Preschool Education (EAN) and the Programme for the Teaching of English in the First and Second Grades of Primary School (PEAP). Students become familiar with the philosophy, pedagogical principles, curricula, teaching materials, and classroom practices associated with both programmes and examine how they translate current understandings of early language learning into classroom practice.

Particular attention is given to play-based and experiential learning, oracy, emergent literacy, storytelling, songs, rhymes and games, theme- and topic-based learning, and the development of children's communicative, cognitive, social, and emotional skills through English. EAN and PEAP are treated not as isolated topics but as recurring reference points through which students connect theory with authentic teaching scenarios and materials used in the Greek educational system.

The course also provides a foundation in child development and educational psychology, examining how children think, learn, interact, and acquire additional languages at different stages of development. Students explore principles of first and second language acquisition and consider their implications for the design of age-appropriate, meaningful, inclusive, and engaging learning experiences.

Throughout the course, students learn to evaluate, adapt, and design teaching materials, activities, lesson plans, and teaching scenarios for young and very young learners. They examine approaches to developing listening and speaking, early reading and writing, vocabulary, and phonological awareness, as well as strategies for assessment, differentiated instruction, classroom interaction, and the appropriate use of digital media and educational technologies.

A strong practical dimension runs throughout the course. Students engage with authentic EAN and PEAP materials, analyse examples of classroom practice, and design activities suitable for preschool children and pupils in the first years of primary education. By the end of the course, students will be able to connect theoretical principles of early language learning with the realities of contemporary English language education in Greek schools and make informed pedagogical decisions when teaching young learners.
