Language change and the history of English
(ENL409) - Πατρίτσια Κολαΐτη
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
This course will introduce students to key concepts and methods in diachronic/ historical linguistics and the study of language change over time, with a particular focus on case studies from the history of English. Using an up-to-date multidisciplinary approach, the course will encourage students to build bridges and employ insights and evidence from research across linguistic domains (pragmatics, sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics and systemic/functional linguistics) in order to illuminate the nature, causes and consequences of language change. The course will use a student-led methodology, actively engaging students in the critical evaluation and interpretation of empirical data: the students will be encouraged to engage in guided group work both inside and outside the class in order to spot patterns, confront data and construct own accounts of the issues in question, as well as deliver mini in-class presentations of their findings and conclusions in the form of student-led microteaching sessions.
