This undergraduate course introduces students to core concepts in translation theory and practice, with particular emphasis on translation shifts and the notion of equivalence across linguistic levels. Drawing primarily on Baker’s (2018) framework, the course examines how translators negotiate non-equivalence at the word, grammatical, textual, and pragmatic levels. Students will analyze authentic texts and identify structural, semantic, and pragmatic shifts that occur during the translation process. Through guided practice and critical discussion, the course develops students’ ability to justify translation decisions using appropriate theoretical terminology and reflect systematically on the nature of cross-linguistic variation.

Το μάθημα περιλαμβάνει μετάφραση, από και προς την αγγλική και την ελληνική γλώσσα, ειδικά επιλεγμένων κειμένων με επικέντρωση σε σημεία έλλειψης ισοδυναμίας μεταξύ των δύο γλωσσών. Εξετάζονται περιπτώσεις έλλειψης ισοδυναμίας σε επίπεδο συντακτικό, σημασιολογικό και πραγματολογικό, σε επίπεδο λέξεων, σταθερών και ιδιωματικών φράσεων και μεγαλύτερων τμημάτων λόγου. Με τον τρόπο αυτό αναδεικνύονται πλευρές της διεργασίας που προϋποθέτει η μεταφορά μηνύματος από την ελληνική στην αγγλική και αντίστροφα, με αποτέλεσμα να αξιοποιείται η γνώση της ελληνικής γλώσσας και να διευρύνεται η γνώση της αγγλικής.
