American Poetry

(ENL306) -  Κωνσταντίνος Μπλατάνης

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The aim of this course is to familiarize students with the evolution and development of American poetry from the 17th century to the present moment. The polyvalence and multifariousness of American poetry are evaluated through an extensive and in-depth study of select works of major poets. In addition, the different modes in which American poetry responds to and interrelates with main schools of thought as well as philosophical trends and literary movements, from Puritanism to Postmodernism, are carefully examined alongside a thorough and instructive assessment of the socio-cultural and political parameters that define each distinctive phase of this tradition.

Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions and are advised to keep themselves informed about additional material distributed by the instructor. Also, students are invited to present short study projects orally in class and produce research papers on topics of their own interest.
