Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

Literay Translation is an elective course in our undergraduate program. It is offered in the winter semester of each academic year, to 7th semester students, within the frames of initial training in Translation Studies. It is intended to provide students with knowledge and skills that enable them to translate texts, analyze them and be in a position, in the long run, to write themselves literary texts by thorougly understanding the different literary genres: Prose, Poetry and Drama.

The course syllabus is covered: a) by weekly sessions, b) the coursebook and suggested further readings, c) texts to practise translation skills, d) a portfolio which is consisted of the work held in class, and on which students work in pairs, e) oral presentations.

The issues presented during the weekly class sessions are based on the coursebook: Translemics: a coursebook on Translation Studies,by Anastasia Paconstantinou, Leader Books, 2004, and on texts to be analyzed, translated and corrected in class , by Ernest Hemingway, Nanos Valaoritis. Nikos Kazantzakis, Kostas Tahtsis, Doris Lessing, Robert Frost, Konstantinos Kavafis, Giorgos Seferis, Odysseas Elytis, Hilda Doolittle, Ezra Pound, Oscar Wilde, Dimitris Kehaidis-Eleni Haviara, Giorgos Skourtis...

Students are evaluated through the final exam which counts 70% of the final grade, a  portfolio which counts 20% ,an Oral Presentation 10%.

PORTFOLIOS/ORAL PRESENTATIONS, specifications

The portfolio is a compilation of all the written assignments in class, on which students have worked and corrected in pairs. A general brief introduction at the beginning of the work and a conclusion at the end explaining the work of the student(s) and the process they have followed is an indispensable part of the project. Every translation should be introduces by a brief biographical note on the author/playright. and a commentary should follow at the end of each translated text, based on the TAPs (Thinking Aloud Protocols). There should be a cover page, with the title of the Project, date of submission, names of the students and I.D student's card numbers,  and name of the instructor.

Oral Presentations will take place the week before and immediately after Christmas. It will be 15 minutes long, on a topic of the student(s)' choice.
