Course Content
The aim of this course is to introduce students to Shakespeare’s drama through the analysis of representative plays taking into consideration the historical, cultural and theatrical context of the Renaissance society. In particular, the course focuses on two major tragedies, a history play and a comedy, and attention is given to contemporary literary and cultural theories that have affected the reading of Shakespeare’s plays in decisive ways. In addition, Shakespeare’s works are approached as literary texts occupying one of the most central positions in the canon of English literature but also as theatrical pieces of great resilience and inexhaustible versatility that have long been and still are widely trusted and highly valued by theatre people on global scale.
Students are expected to participate actively in class discussions. In addition, they will be asked to react and comment on excerpts from filmed productions of the plays studied. Students will have access to a list of bibliography, while the assessment is based on two critical essays (optional) and a final exam.
