2nd semester 2025 : Intrοduction to American Fiction
Friday, 12.00-3.00.
Amp. 430
This course is designed to offer an overview of the major authors and dominant literary movements in American fiction from the 19th century to the present. The Introduction to American Fiction is performed mostly through short stories, as the short form is considered to be most appropriate, thought-provoking, intense and read "in one sitting." Short stories speak of the prevailing themes and preoccupations, while creating an opportunity to expand and elaborate on their authors' work at large. Through the short stories we will explore key concepts of fiction, such as "setting," "character," "point of view," or “style” among others, in a comprehensive yet concise manner. In addition, a study of the short stories will allow us to trace the developments in American Fiction and place literary production within its socio-historical background.

Emerson says in “The American Scholar":
”There is then creative reading as well as creative writing”

Jorge Luis Borges writes in Obra poetica :
"The taste of the apple lies in the contact of the fruit with the palate, not in the fruit itself; in a similar way (I would say) poetry lies in the meeting of the poem and reader, not in the lines of symbols printed on the pages of a book. What is essential is the aesthetic act, the thrill, the almost physical emotion that comes with each reading."
