Introduction to Linguistics II

(ENL188) -  Νικηφορίδου Βασιλική

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The course aims to familiarize students with aspects of the study of linguistic meaning and its relation to social and cultural parameters. In particular, the course introduces basic concepts pertaining to the semantic and pragmatic analysis of language as well as to the analysis of text and discourse. It further looks at language as a social phenomenon, addressing issues of social and regional variation.

The course is offered in the form of lectures and is supported by an extensive bibliography on the topics introduced in the course, study material distributed and practised in class, and two textbooks, parts of which are generally expected to facilitate the students' study. Self-assessment tests and weekly homework during the semester are used to monitor students' understanding of the topics discussed in class. Students are evaluated mainly in terms of an end-of-term exam. The course is evaluated anonymously by students at the end of the semester.
