Intercultural Communication
(ENL168) - Μαρία Σηφιανού
Περιγραφή Μαθήματος
The study of intercultural communication is particularly important nowadays, since the world is becoming increasingly smaller insofar as people from different societies travel and interact with greater frequency. Thus, the potential for miscommunication increases, given the differing norms of interaction across speech communities.
The aim of this course is to focus on the interconnection of language and culture and thus develop students? intercultural awareness. To this end, the broad concept of politeness, viewed both as concern for solidarity as well as for non-imposition, is explored. Various speech acts, with particular reference to Greek and English requests are thoroughly analysed to illustrate situational and cultural variability. Linguistic variation and gender are also explored with specific reference to issues of politeness.
Using the overarching phenomenon of politeness, the course aims at enabling students to realise that one?s norms of behaviour, linguistic or otherwise, are not the only natural or reasonable ones. Linguistic and cultural groups are not more or less polite than others but they conceptualise and thus realise their politeness in different ways. It is hoped that such an understanding will enable students to become more sensitive to diversity and avoid misunderstandings.
Students are encouraged to collect and analyse their own data.
