BAAG 75608 Latin poetry: Catullus and Horace (Spring semester 2025-2026)

(BAAG182) -  Andreas N. Michalopoulos

Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

This course explores Roman lyric poetry through selected works of Catullus and Horace. We will examine how lyric voice articulates desire, friendship, rivalry, politics, and memory in the late Roman Republic and early Augustan age. Beginning with Catullus’ intensely personal and emotionally volatile poems and moving to Horace’s more controlled and philosophically inflected lyric persona, the course traces the transformation of poetic selfhood and authority in Rome.
