Περιγραφή Μαθήματος

The objective of the course is to introduce students to the political, ideological, and cultural landscape of the Age of Augustus, with particular emphasis on Ovid’s Heroides, a landmark work of Augustan elegy. The seminar will examine the distinctive features of Latin love elegy and explore Ovid’s transformation of the genre in his epistolary poems. Special attention will be given to the construction of female voice and subjectivity, the reconfiguration of gendered discourse, and the ways in which the Heroides engage with and challenge the gendered conventions of Roman literary culture. Students will engage in close reading, discussion, and contextual analysis.
