The course "The Roman Empire: History and Literature" examines the culture and the political and social history of the Roman Empire starting from the Age of Augustus. The course is addressed to students of the 8th semester. The present e-class webpage contains material related to the political and social history of the Empire.
The focus is on the organization of the Roman Empire by Augustus, its administrative structures and its social hierarchies.

Course Syllabus
SYLLABUS
The course examines the political and social history of the Roman Empire starting from the Age of Augustus. The focus is on the organization of the Roman Empire by Augustus, its administrative structures and its social hierarchies.
The following issues will be examined:
-a brief introduction to the institutions of the Roman Republic (week 1)
- institutional changes in the Age of Augustus (weeks 2-4)
- The legitimization of the new regime (week 5)
- The administration of the Empire (weeks 6-8)
- The cities of the Roman Empire (week 9)
- Social hierarchies in the Roman Empire (week 10)
-The Roman Emperors after Augustus (weeks 11-12)
-The 3rd century AD (week 13).
Assesment of students will be based on:
-midterm exam (30%)
-oral presentation of a topic (regarding the Roman Emperors after Augustus) (20%)
- final exam (50%)
