Roman Republican History

The course "Roman Republican History and Literature"  offers an overview of both the literature and the political and social history of the Roman Republic. The course is addresed to students of the 8th semester. The present e-class webpage includes material related only to the history of the Roman Republic. 

The focus is on the the Roman constitution, the gradual expansion of Rome across Italy and beyond, the First and Second Carthaginian Wars, the economic impasse in the aftermath of the overseas expansion, and the civil wars of the first century BCE that led to the rise of Augustus

    The following topics will be examined:

    -Historical sources for the Roman Republic

    -Rome under the Kings

    -The Conflict of Orders (Patricians versus Plebeians)

    - The crystallization of the Roman constitution

    -Roman expansion in Italy and in the Mediterranean Sea

    -The "crisis" of the 2nd century BC

    -The civil wars that led to the collapse of the Republic
