The objective of the course is to introduce students to the political, ideological, and cultural landscape of the Age of Augustus in Rome, with a particular focus on Ovid's Heroides, a seminal work in Latin and world literature. We will explore the distinctive features of Latin love elegy and examine Ovid's innovative contribution to the renewal and enrichment of this genre through his Heroides (the "feminine" discourse, "feminine" perspective, and the "feminine" subversion of the male-dominated literary norms).

N.B. Prior knowledge of Latin is not a prerequisite for this course. We will be engaging with English translations of the Heroides.
