The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of Ancient Greek History (historical periods, space, structures and institutions). The course also focuses on the various kinds of sources on Ancient History and on the methodology regarding their use. Finally, the course provides an overview of the main perspectives of studying Ancient History (interstate realtions, politics and institutions, society and economy, culture and ethnicity)

Course Syllabus
The aim of this course is to familiarize the students with the basic concepts of historical studies (time, space, historical event, structures, institutions). The course also focuses on the various kinds of sources on Ancient History and on the methodology regarding their use. Finally, the course provides an overview of the main perspectives of studying Ancient History (interstate relations, politics and institutions, society and economy, culture and ethnicity).
The course examines the following topics
- History as a science (scope and methodology) (week 1)
- The geographical framework of Ancient Greek History (week 2)
- The chronological framework of Ancient Greek History (periodization) (week 3)
- The literary sources for Ancient Greek History (Historiography, Oratory, Philosophy, Poetry etc. (weeks 4-5)
- The epigraphic, numismatic and papyrological sources (weeks 6-9)
- The genres of Ancient Greek History: Political History; Social History; Economic History; History of identities, culture and ethnicity (weeks 10-13)
