The talk examines how Turkish naming practices reflect modernity, class
mobility, and national identity. It shows that male names often evoke
nationalism and heroism, while female names emphasize beauty and nature.
Rather than a sharp break in the 1930s, naming trends evolved gradually,
with each decade producing distinct patterns. It also highlights that
names function as class markers, spreading from elites to broader society,
revealing how personal choices mirror wider social and political
aspirations.
