The lecture tomorrow (and a follow up next week) will be devoted to Quality of Experience:

Quality of Experience characterization and provisioning in wireless and mobile networks (7 & 14/12/2018)

This two-part lecture introduces the notion of Quality of Experience (QoE). First, it discusses the need to transition to QoE criteria to evaluate the performance of modern mobile communication networks, as well as the technical and general challenges that arise. Furthermore, the relationship between Quality of Service (QoS) and QoE is explained, while the importance and feasibility of managing networks and services in a QoE-driven way is highlighted. Then, a framework for the provisioning of QoE to the end users of cellular networks is proposed in terms of its required building blocks, their inner functionalities and in-between interactions. Afterwards, the topic of QoE modeling is presented by identifying and describing parametric QoE estimation formulas for the most popular types of services, resulting in key performance indicators and customization metrics per service type. The lecture then provides some examples that demonstrate the potential of managing a mobile cellular network in a QoE-driven way, with the objective to improve the end users’ quality perception or to manage the network in a more efficient way. Finally, some practical examples of QoE measurement are presented.
