Upon completion of learning module "ORTH51- Orthodoxy in the 21th Century" the student will be able to handle the following issues:
-Role, cultural and spiritual message of Orthodoxy in the 21th century of post- modernity and "post-ecclesial" world.
-Universal Church and Globalization. Foundations of Church's universality and interrelations with our contemporary global environment.
-Origins of the Orthodox autocephalous Churches. Their relations with Mother-Church of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople and the national identity/ native civilization and further study of its ecumenical status.
-Apply analytical frameworks and theories to compare different countries Orthodox communities.
After the great enlargement of the European Union eastward on May 2004 1st, when ten new member states (Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia) joined E.U., most of them including large orthodox communities in their borders, for those searching to find and focus on spiritual values that can further promote the European Ideal, the following questions rise:
-Will it be possible for Christianity to overcome the Great Schism of the previous millennia so as to spread it's authentic and living Testimony on Existence, as consistent and universally united as 1.000 years ago?
-In this period of deep not only economical but, primarily, social and ethical crisis, a crisis of the human being itself, which cultural message, which life values should Orthodoxy transmit? What Orthodoxy can do for the World?
