Course Info for International Students

Course Description, Goals, and Learning Outcomes

The Psychology of Migration examines human mobility and the psychological processes associated with migration, acculturation, and adaptation in culturally diverse societies. The course introduces major theoretical models of acculturation, cultural ideologies, and levels of analysis, while also addressing methodological challenges in migration research. Particular attention is given to acculturative stress and coping, cultural learning and intercultural communication, ethnic identity, intergroup relations, prejudice and discrimination, and the mental health of migrants and refugees. The course also considers migration across the life span, including the adaptation of children and adolescents with an immigrant or refugee background to school settings, as well as culturally responsive counselling, psychotherapy, empowerment, and intercultural mediation.
The course aims to provide students with a theoretically informed and interdisciplinary understanding of migration-related psychological processes. It seeks to integrate perspectives from Cross-Cultural, Social, Developmental, and Clinical Psychology, while encouraging critical reflection on migration-related stereotypes, inequalities, and the broader social and cultural contexts in which migration and acculturation take place.
Upon successful completion of the course, students are expected to be able to explain major theories and models of migration, acculturation, psychological adaptation, social integration, and inclusion; analyse the psychological, social, cultural, and contextual factors affecting migrants and refugees; critically evaluate empirical findings and methodological approaches in migration research; apply psychological concepts to educational, counselling, mental health, and intercultural contexts; and recognize and critically reflect on stereotypes, inequalities, discrimination, and other challenges associated with migration and intercultural relations.

Readings and Study Material

The instructor will recommend handbooks and journal articles in printed (from the university library) or digital (pdf) form, as well as online sources. Classes and Meetings

Undergraduate courses at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens are taught in Greek. In-class interaction with local students is possible when student presentations are scheduled (usually in English). In addition, the instructor expects to maintain regular contact with Erasmus students, i.e., at least 2-3 times per month. Meetings will be held during the instructor’s office hours (Tuesday, 12:00-14:00) or by appointment (via Calendly). In the latter case, remote meetings (i.e., via Webex) are possible.

Grading

Three grading options are available:

• a 3-hour written exam, based on the recommended reading material; or
• an oral exam, based on the above reading material; or
• a course assignment (see details below).

In addition to one of the three grading options listed above, all students are required to give an oral presentation during the semester (see details below). The oral presentation accounts for 30% of the final grade, while the selected grading option accounts for the remaining 70%.
The exam, whether written or oral, will consist of open-ended questions requiring you to develop and elaborate on your answers (e.g., define and/or critically discuss a theoretical construct, compare constructs, provide examples, link theories to applications, etc.). A 10-point grading scale will apply, with the following classifications: 9-10 = ‘excellent’, 8 = ‘very good’, 6-7 = ‘good’, 5 = ‘pass’, and 1-4 = ‘fail’.

Oral Presentation
All students are required to give an oral presentation in class, usually scheduled towards the end of the academic semester. The exact time, topic, and content of the presentation will be determined in consultation with the instructor. If the course assignment has been selected as the grading option, the oral presentation will be based on the written assignment. Each presentation must not exceed 15 minutes. A short discussion with the audience may follow. Equipment for Powerpoint or compatible presentations will be provided. 
The oral presentation accounts for 30% of the final grade. It will be assessed on the basis of the structure and completeness of the content, as well as the quality of the answers provided during the discussion that follows. English language proficiency will not be assessed.

Course Assignment

The course assignment is intended to provide students with the opportunity to explore in greater depth a specific topic in the Psychology of Migration and to develop their skills in literature review, critical analysis, and academic writing. Specifically:

• A course assignment consists of a written essay. If this grading option is selected, the mandatory oral presentation will be based on the written assignment.
• The official language is English.
• The topic of an assignment will be defined in consultation with the instructor within the first four weeks of classes. The assignment will consist primarily of a critical review of the relevant literature; it may also include a small-scale empirical study, although this is not required. First, you will need to select a specific psychological topic or domain and examine it from a cross-cultural perspective. Possible topics may include, but are not limited to, acculturative stress, coping and adaptation, cultural learning, ethnic identity, discrimination and prejudice, intergroup relations, migrant and refugee mental health, development and school adaptation, intercultural communication, or culturally responsive counselling and intervention. The main objective of your essay will be to summarize and critically review the relevant psychological literature, with particular attention to theoretical explanations, empirical evidence, methodological issues, and the broader social and cultural context.
• The content of an assignment must be original. Any material drawn from third-party sources (e.g., theoretical models, empirical findings, critical comments or conclusions, tables, figures, etc.) must be appropriately cited, and a complete reference list must be provided. Follow the APA guidelines for in-text citations and references. 
• The structure of a literature review is flexible: you may organize your ideas and develop your arguments in the way that makes the most sense for your topic. In any case, you will need to include the following: (a) a cover page; (b) an abstract of approximately 150-200 words and 3-5 keywords; (c) a table of contents, if the main body of your essay contains more than two parts, chapters, or sections; and (d) a reference list. Note that these sections are not included in the word limit (see below). In the case of an empirical study, the standard structure should be followed, i.e., Introduction, Method, Results, and Discussion.
• At least five academic sources must be consulted and appropriately cited. Acceptable sources include scientific journal articles (print or online), book chapters, textbooks or handbooks, and academic webpages. Do not use popular or non-scientific material, or online sources for which the author and/or publication date cannot be identified.
• Written essays must be approximately 3,500 words or 14 pages long (±500 words or 2 pages, assuming approximately 250 words per page under the standard formatting guidelines). The cover page, table of contents, abstract, and references are not included in these limits.
• APA publication guidelines must be followed when formatting the manuscript (page margins: 2.54 cm or 1 inch; paragraph: double-spaced, indented; alignment: flush left; font: Times New Roman; font size: 12 points). APA style also applies to headings, cover page, tables, figures, and the reference list.
• Assignments must be submitted by the end of the teaching period of the academic semester. Send an electronic copy (in doc, docx, or odt format) by email.
• Written assignments will be graded on the basis of the quality of their content and structure, the breadth and credibility of the sources used, and grammar and mechanics. A 10-point scale will apply, with the following classifications: 9-10 = ‘excellent’, 8 = ‘very good’, 6-7 = ‘good’, 5 = ‘pass’, and 1-4 = ‘fail’.

Στόχοι και Μαθησιακά Αποτελέσματα

Στόχος του μαθήματος είναι να προσφέρει στις φοιτήτριες και στους φοιτητές μια θεωρητικά τεκμηριωμένη και διεπιστημονική κατανόηση των ψυχολογικών διεργασιών που συνδέονται με τη μετανάστευση. Επιδιώκει να συνδυάσει οπτικές από τη Διαπολιτισμική, την Κοινωνική, την Αναπτυξιακή και την Κλινική Ψυχολογία, ενθαρρύνοντας παράλληλα τον κριτικό αναστοχασμό πάνω στα στερεότυπα και τις ανισότητες που σχετίζονται με τη μετανάστευση, καθώς και στα ευρύτερα κοινωνικά και πολιτισμικά πλαίσια μέσα στα οποία εκτυλίσσονται η μετανάστευση και η επιπολιτισμοποίηση.

Με την επιτυχή ολοκλήρωση του μαθήματος, οι φοιτήτριες και οι φοιτητές αναμένεται να είναι σε θέση: 

• να εξηγούν βασικές θεωρίες και μοντέλα της μετανάστευσης, της επιπολιτισμοποίησης, της ψυχολογικής προσαρμογής, της κοινωνικής ένταξης και της συμπερίληψης· 
• να αναλύουν τους ψυχολογικούς, κοινωνικούς, πολιτισμικούς και συγκειμενικούς παράγοντες που επηρεάζουν μετανάστες και πρόσφυγες· 
• να αξιολογούν κριτικά εμπειρικά ευρήματα και μεθοδολογικές προσεγγίσεις στην έρευνα για τη μετανάστευση· 
• να εφαρμόζουν ψυχολογικές έννοιες σε εκπαιδευτικά, συμβουλευτικά, κλινικά και διαπολιτισμικά πλαίσια· και 
• να αναγνωρίζουν και να αναστοχάζονται κριτικά πάνω σε στερεότυπα, ανισότητες, διακρίσεις και άλλες προκλήσεις που συνδέονται με τη μετανάστευση και τις διαπολιτισμικές σχέσεις.

Εκπαιδευτικό Υλικό

Η διδακτέα ύλη προέρχεται από εγχειρίδια (textbooks), καθώς και από δημοσιευμένες έρευνες σε ελληνικά και διεθνή επιστημονικά περιοδικά. Το συμπληρωματικό αυτό υλικό παρουσιάζεται στις διαλέξεις και αναρτάται στην ιστοσελίδα του μαθήματος.

Η εξεταστέα ύλη προέρχεται από τα διδακτικά συγγράμματα και το συμπληρωματικό υλικό των προφορικών διαλέξεων, όπως αυτό αναρτάται στην ιστοσελίδα του μαθήματος.

Οι δραστηριότητες αφορούν σε περιορισμένης έκτασης ενασχόληση με το μάθημα εκτός του αμφιθεάτρου κατά τη διάρκεια του ακαδημαϊκού εξαμήνου. Σκοπός τους δεν είναι η εμβάθυνση σε ένα θέμα, αλλά η διατήρηση της επαφής με το μάθημα μεταξύ των διαλέξεων και η εξοικείωση με συναφείς έννοιες μέσα από την επιστημονική μέθοδο αναζήτησης και αξιοποίησης των πηγών. Η εκπόνηση των δραστηριοτήτων είναι προαιρετική, γίνεται σε ατομική βάση και δεν πριμοδοτείται βαθμολογικά.

Αξιολόγηση

• Γραπτή εξέταση. Είναι υποχρεωτική. Βασίζεται σε εξεταστέα ύλη (διαλέξεις, βιβλιογραφία) που διατίθεται σταδιακά στη διάρκεια του ακαδημαϊκού εξαμήνου και οριστικοποιείται εγκαίρως με σχετική ανακοίνωση στο eClass. Περιλαμβάνει συνδυασμό ερωτήσεων κλειστού τύπου (Σωστό/Λάθος) και ανοιχτού τύπου (σύντομης απάντησης). 
• Γραπτή εργασία. Είναι προαιρετική και μπορεί να προσθέσει έως μία μονάδα bonus στη βαθμολογία του μαθήματος, επιπλέον της γραπτής εξέτασης. Αφορά στη σε βάθος προσέγγιση ενός θέματος συναφούς με το γνωστικό αντικείμενο του μαθήματος αξιοποιώντας έγκυρες βιβλιογραφικές πηγές (κυρίως, δημοσιεύσεις σε επιστημονικά περιοδικά με κριτές). Οι προτεινόμενες θεματικές ενότητες και οι προδιαγραφές της εργασίας, μαζί με σχετικές οδηγίες, αναρτώνται στο eClass. 
• Προφορική παρουσίαση. Οι φοιτήτριες και οι φοιτητές που έχουν αναλάβει την εκπόνηση εργασίας ενθαρρύνονται επιπλέον να την παρουσιάσουν προφορικά στο αμφιθέατρο. Η προφορική παρουσίαση είναι προαιρετική και μπορεί να προσθέσει έως μία μονάδα bonus στη βαθμολογία του μαθήματος, επιπλέον της γραπτής εξέτασης και της γραπτής εργασίας. Οι παρουσιάσεις των εργασιών γίνονται στη διάρκεια των διαλέξεων, προς το τέλος του ακαδημαϊκού εξαμήνου, με προσομοίωση των προδιαγραφών που ισχύουν στα επιστημονικά συνέδρια. Συνήθως, δίνεται χρόνος 5-10 λεπτά για κάθε παρουσίαση και ακολουθεί σύντομη συζήτηση.
